Serious contenders and alternatives
Apple iPad 11-inch A16: is the simple iPad value alternative with 128GB base storage, strong apps and broad retail support. Lenovo currently offers far more hardware and an included pen at similar or lower money.
Apple iPad Pro 11-inch M5: is the premium creative alternative, with tandem OLED, ProMotion, Face ID and immense performance. At A$1,999 before accessories, it is difficult to justify for most general buyers.
Apple iPad mini A17 Pro: is the compact travel alternative. Its 8.3-inch format is excellent when portability dominates, but narrower for media, split-screen work, drawing and keyboards.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra: is the large-screen Android alternative. Its huge AMOLED panel and DeX suit desk use, but size, weight and price make the standard S11 the better-balanced general recommendation.
Apple iPad Air 11-inch M4 — 256GB Wi-Fi

The locked MH354X/A configuration pairs the eight-core M4 CPU, nine-core GPU and 12GB unified memory with 256GB storage. Its laminated 10.86-inch Liquid Retina IPS display is colour-accurate and antireflective, but remains a 60Hz LCD rather than OLED.
Extended product analysis
At 2360 × 1640, 264ppi and 500 nits, the display is sharp and well suited to general work, media and Pencil input. Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C are supported, but neither is included. The landscape 12MP Center Stage front camera is more useful for calls than a portrait-edge camera.
iPadOS 26 adds more flexible resizable windows, Stage Manager, external-display support and improved file workflows. It still differs from macOS, so specialised desktop software and file-heavy workflows need checking before treating the tablet as a laptop replacement.
Battery and ownership boundary
Apple rates web or video use at up to 10 hours; independent web testing has landed close to that under a different method. There is no microSD expansion, storage upgrades are expensive, and Magic Keyboard materially increases total cost.

The 11-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel runs at 2560 × 1600 and 120Hz. Samsung claims up to 1600-nit peak highlights and 1000-nit high-brightness mode; neither figure should be read as sustained full-screen brightness.

The locked Wi-Fi model combines 12GB memory, 256GB storage and microSD expansion up to 2TB. Samsung's included hexagonal S Pen is a material value advantage for notes, drawing and annotation, while DeX, windowed multitasking, Quick Share and Samsung Notes make this the most flexible Android productivity pick.
At 469g and 5.5mm, it is almost as light as the iPad Air despite the AMOLED hardware. IP68 resistance adds reassurance, but Samsung's limitations still apply: it is water-resistant, not waterproof.
Support and charging
Samsung currently lists security support through 30 September 2032. The 8400mAh battery carries an up-to-18-hour wireless-video claim, which is not directly comparable with Apple's web-use test. A USB-C cable is supplied, but no charging adapter.

The 13-inch 3504 × 2190 LTPS IPS panel has a paper-like antiglare treatment and 144Hz refresh. It cannot match Samsung's OLED blacks, but its size, resolution, smoothness and reduced reflections are unusually strong at this price.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, Adreno 825 graphics, 12GB LPDDR5X and 256GB UFS 4.0 storage provide strong general and gaming performance. The Tab Pen Plus supports 4096 pressure levels, tilt and palm rejection; a keyboard pack is optional.
Independent testing supports a high-quality metal chassis, precise touch, excellent Wi-Fi 7 performance and capable speakers, while also identifying warming, some sustained-load throttling and only moderate battery life from the 10,200mAh pack.
Longevity boundary
Lenovo's current policy extends operating-system upgrades through Android 18 and security patches to around 2030. That is materially shorter than Samsung's security horizon and the historically long iPad support pattern. At about 598g, this large tablet is also less comfortable one-handed.

Buying advice
Choose the ecosystem, then check the work
iPad Air fits naturally with iPhone, Mac, AirPods, iCloud and Apple's strongest tablet-app catalogue. Galaxy Tab S11 works particularly well with Galaxy phones, Samsung Notes, Quick Share and DeX. Lenovo prioritises Android hardware value. Ecosystem matters, but it should not override the apps and accessories your actual work needs.
Display quality is more than resolution
Samsung has the best finalist panel for contrast and media through 120Hz AMOLED. Lenovo offers the best display value through a large 3.5K 144Hz matte IPS panel. Apple's laminated 60Hz IPS display is accurate and pleasant, but refresh rate is its clearest hardware limitation.
Pen included does not mean keyboard included
Samsung and Lenovo include active pens; Apple does not. All three charge extra for their preferred keyboard solution. Check layout, trackpad, case weight and total installed price before treating any slate as a laptop substitute.
Storage and support shape long-term value
Samsung and Lenovo accept microSD cards; iPad does not. Samsung publishes security support through September 2032, Lenovo's commitment is shorter, and Apple does not publish a fixed end date even though iPads historically receive long software support.
Battery figures are not interchangeable
Apple's web-use figure, Samsung's wireless-video figure and independent mixed-use tests use different workloads. Screen brightness, gaming, cellular use, refresh rate and standby behaviour can change endurance substantially.

Which tablet is best for most people?
The 256GB 11-inch iPad Air M4 is the strongest broad recommendation because performance, apps, portability, accessories and service are consistently strong. Samsung is better for buyers prioritising Android, OLED and an included pen; Lenovo offers better hardware value.
Is the Apple Pencil included with iPad Air?
No. Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C are sold separately. Samsung includes the S Pen with Tab S11, and Lenovo includes Tab Pen Plus with exact model ZAHD0096AU.
Can these tablets replace a laptop?

Use compatible chargers and undamaged cables, keep tablets ventilated during demanding workloads, and follow manufacturer guidance around water, heat and battery damage. Water-resistance ratings do not make a tablet waterproof.
