For air conditioners: compare the unit's running input and compressor starting requirement, including any soft-start device, with the generator's rated output.
Other generators we considered
Buying advice
These current alternatives have useful strengths, but each missed a finalist award on the evidence and buyer fit available for this broad guide.
- Cromtech CTG2500i: light with a mature Australian owner pool, but current owner feedback is more mixed and the exact current product status is less clear.
- Westinghouse 2400i: a value alternative with mixed exact-model owner signals, including starting and overload reports.
- Gentrax GT2500: a lower-cost option with positive owner value feedback; Engel has the stronger warranty and service proposition for a broad caravan recommendation.
- Engel R3000iE: higher output and electric start, but at about 44.5kg it overlaps the Gentrax high-output role without a clearer overall advantage.
- Honda EU30iS: mature platform, but the lighter and more powerful current EU32i is the stronger premium choice at similar prices.
- Yamaha EF-series: respected engineering, but current Australian exact-model availability and retail depth are less consistent.
How to choose an inverter generator
Buying advice
Continuous output matters more than the headline peak
Size for the load you can sustain, then check the short starting surge of motors and compressors. A generator's maximum figure is not its continuous rating. Leave operating headroom and account for appliances that may start together.
kVA and kW are not universal equivalents
kVA measures apparent power; kW measures real power. Their relationship depends on power factor. Keep the unit the manufacturer publishes and do not assume 1kVA equals 1kW. Compare like-for-like ratings where possible.
Match the output class to the job
The EU22i's 1,800VA rated class suits many fridges, freezers, chargers, lighting and smaller camping loads. Engel's current 2.3kVA rated class adds headroom while remaining manageable to move. EU32i's 2,600VA and Gentrax's 3.5kW rated output better suit selected larger loads, but appliance requirements still decide compatibility.
Caravan air conditioners need a starting-load check
Some owners successfully run caravan air conditioners from these sizes of generator. Compatibility depends on the exact unit's running input, compressor start surge, soft-start hardware and other connected loads. Verify the air-conditioner specification; no finalist is guaranteed to run every unit.
Inverter output and sensitive electronics
All four are inverter generators. Engel explicitly specifies pure sine-wave output and Gentrax markets it. Honda describes its inverter technology for stable portable power. Do not assume zero distortion or an exact THD figure unless the exact model publishes it.
Noise numbers are not a clean ranking
Published claims use different loads, distances and sound-pressure or sound-power methods. EU22i material commonly quotes 52–59dBA under varying conditions, Gentrax claims 58dB at 7m, and Engel publishes about 67–68dBA at 7m. These are not a matched test, so they do not establish a reliable quietest-to-loudest order.
Runtime depends on load
Every runtime figure needs its load condition: Gentrax about 6.8 hours at 50%; Engel up to about 7 hours at 50%; EU32i 3.3 hours at rated load or 8.6 hours at quarter load; EU22i up to about 8 hours under low Eco-Throttle load. Higher load generally reduces runtime.
Fuel, maintenance and storage
Petrol generators need engine oil, air-filter and spark-plug care, fresh fuel practices and storage preparation under the exact owner's manual. Stale fuel can cause starting trouble. Turn the generator off and let it cool before refuelling; keep fuel in suitable containers away from ignition sources and clean spills safely.
Weight, starting and parallel operation
At about 21.1kg, EU22i is the lightest finalist; Engel is 23.5kg, EU32i 26.5kg, and the roughly 42kg Gentrax is better treated as rollable with its wheels than easy to hand-carry. EU22i, Engel and EU32i use recoil starting; Gentrax adds key and remote start. Parallel capability requires suitable model-specific equipment and does not remove the need to respect load limits.
Australian service and spare parts
Honda and Engel provide established Australian service support. Gentrax offers far more output per dollar, but owner feedback and warranty/support experiences are more variable. Check the local service path, warranty terms and parts availability before buying.
Inverter generator or portable power station?
A fuel-powered generator can keep producing electricity while fuel is available and is useful for long outages or remote use. It also produces carbon monoxide, noise, hot exhaust and needs petrol and engine maintenance. A suitable power station is quiet, has no combustion exhaust and can run suitable devices indoors, but its stored energy is finite and recharging takes time.
Neither category is universally better. Compare outage duration, indoor needs, load, recharge options and safe operating space. See Best Portable Power Stations in Australia.
Generator safety: carbon monoxide can kill
Run petrol generators outdoors only, in an open, well-ventilated area and well away from windows, doors and vents. Never operate one inside a house, garage, shed, caravan, tent, basement, carport, enclosed patio or other partly enclosed area. Opening a door or window does not make indoor use safe. Keep the hot exhaust away from people and combustible materials and follow the exact manual.
Switch off and allow the generator to cool before refuelling. Use an appropriate fuel container, keep petrol away from ignition sources and follow manufacturer instructions. Do not modify the generator or its electrical output.
During a blackout, connect suitable appliances directly using an appropriately rated outdoor extension lead. Never connect a generator to house wiring through a normal power point or improvised lead. A fixed-wiring connection requires suitable changeover equipment installed by a licensed electrician.

How we chose
Detailed methodology
We compared current Australian petrol inverter generators on rated and maximum output, starting surge, weight, fuel capacity, qualified runtime, starting method, noise claims, warranty, service access, current availability and exact-model owner evidence. Awards reflect distinct buyer decisions; the ranking is not sorted by score alone.
Worth Buying scores are editorial judgements, not customer ratings. Manufacturer specifications, retailer claims, independent owner feedback and customer aggregates remain separate evidence pools. Customer ratings are shown only for the exact model or product platform and source named on each card.
Choose from rated output and starting load
List the appliances you will run together, then check the largest motor or compressor starting surge. A generator's peak figure is not its continuous capacity. Confirm the exact appliance input and generator limits before buying.
All four selections are petrol inverter generators intended for outdoor operation. None is maintenance-free: follow its own manual for oil, air-filter, spark-plug and fuel-storage care.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best inverter generator in Australia?
Honda EU22i is the broad pick for buyers who prioritise mature reliability evidence, portability and Australian support. Higher-output buyers may prefer Gentrax GTX4200 Pro or Honda EU32i.
What size inverter generator do I need?
Add the continuous loads you expect to run together and check the largest relevant starting surge. Do not size solely from the generator's peak output.
Can a 2kVA generator run a caravan air conditioner?
Sometimes. It depends on the exact air conditioner's running and compressor-start requirements, any soft-start hardware and other connected loads.
Can I run a fridge from an inverter generator?
Generally, if the generator can handle both the fridge's running input and compressor-start load. Check the exact appliance and other loads; no blanket guarantee applies to every fridge.
Can I use a generator inside a garage?
No. Petrol generators must run outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from openings. Carbon monoxide can kill, and opening garage doors does not make generator use inside safe.
Can I connect a portable generator to my house?
Not through a normal power point or improvised lead. A fixed-wiring connection needs suitable changeover equipment installed by a licensed electrician.
Is an inverter generator better than a power station?
They suit different needs. A generator can run for longer while fuel is available; a power station is quieter, has no combustion exhaust and can power suitable devices indoors, but has finite battery capacity.
Are Honda generators worth the extra money?
For buyers who value lower weight, mature owner history, parts and service support, often yes. For occasional backup where output per dollar matters most, Gentrax may make better economic sense.
How often does a petrol generator need maintenance?
Follow the exact manufacturer's schedule. Ownership tasks can include oil, an air filter, spark plug and fuel-system care; storage and starting-battery care may also apply.
